Get it right: 

1. Shake the inhaler well.
2. Sit or stand up straight and slightly tilt your chin up as it helps the medicine reach your lungs.
3. Breathe out gently and slowly away from the inhaler until your lungs feel empty and you feel ready to breathe in.
4. Put your lips around the mouthpiece of the inhaler to make a tight seal.
5. Start to breathe in slowly and steadily and, at the same time, press the canister on the inhaler once.
6. Continue to breathe in slowly until your lungs feel full.
7. Take the inhaler out of your mouth and with your lips closed hold your breath for up to ten seconds or for as long as you comfortably can.
8. Then breathe out gently away from your inhaler.
9. If you’ve been prescribed a second puff wait 30 seconds to a minute and shake the inhaler again, then repeat the steps.
10. When you have finished replace the cap on the inhaler.
11. If you’ve used an inhaler that contains steroids rinse your mouth with water and spit it out to reduce the chance of side effects.

However, you should not use Ventolin inhalers or any other inhalers unless the doctor has allowed you to do so.

How many puffs of Ventolin should I take for a cough?

If you need to use your blue inhaler more than 4 times in 24 hours, then it means that your condition is getting worse and you may need a different treatment regime. You are more likely to get side effects from salbutamol such as headaches, palpitation,  nervousness, etc.

Contact your GP, pharmacist or asthma nurse if you are using your Ventolin inhaler more than 4 times a day, more than 2 days a week, or need Ventolin in the middle of the night at least once a week.

If you think you are having an asthma attack, you can use the Ventolin inhaler for up to 10 puffs, please leave 30 seconds gap and shake the inhaler between each puff.
