Frequently asked questions
Levonelle tablet is a emergency morning after pill. It contains levonorgestrel 1.5mg tablet that can be used within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex for an emergency contraception.
• No contraception was used during the sexual intercourse.
• The contraception measure was used incorrectly, for example as if a condom was penetrated, slipped away or used in a wrong way, if vaginal pessary or diaphragm changed position, burst, was broken, or taken out ahead of time, in the case of a failed interruption during coitus interruptus (e.g. sperm ejaculated in vagina or on external genitalia).
Levonorgestrel 1.5mg tablet works by:
• stopping your ovaries from releasing an egg;
• preventing sperm from fertilising any egg you may have already released.
Levonorgestrel 1.5mg tablet can only prevent you from becoming pregnant if you take it within 72 hours of unprotected sex.
It does not work if you are already pregnant. If another unprotected intercourse takes place after the use of Levonorgestrel 1.5mg tablets (also if this is during the same menstrual cycle), the tablet will not exert its contraceptive effect and there is again the risk of pregnancy.
Levonorgestrel 1.5mg tablet prevents about 84% of expected pregnancies when taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sex. It is better to take it within 12 hours rather than delay until the third day.

Levonorgestrel (generic Levonelle) does not cause any serious or long term side effects. It can however cause some mild and passing side effects, mostly dependent on which stage of your menstrual cycle they were taken. The side effects will usually pass without you needing any treatment.
Levonelle side effects can cause:
- headaches
- nausea
- vomiting
- lower abdominal pain
- irregular bleeding on your next period
- fatigue
- shortening or lengthening of your next period
When taken early on in your period, Levonelle may cause the cycle to get shorter. It might delay the start of your next period or have no effect if taken later on in the cycle. Most women will have their period on time.
Levonorgestrel tablet may also cause unusual bleeding and you may have some spotting. This may continue until your next period. There is no cause for concern unless the bleeding is excessive or does not stop. If your period is more than 5 days late then you should consult a doctor.
