How many types of pneumonia vaccines?

There are 2 types of pneumonia vaccines available depending on the age and health. 

Type – 1: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) is used to vaccinate children under 2 years old as part of the NHS childhood vaccination programme. PCV is known by the brand name Prevenar 13.

Type – 2: Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPV23) is given to people aged 65 and over and people at high risk because they have long-term health conditions. PPV is known by brand name Pneumovax23.

Children at risk of pneumococcal infections can have the PPV vaccine from the age of 2 years onwards.

Is pneumococcal vaccine safe in pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Pneumococcal vaccine PPV23 is thought to be safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

But as a precaution, you may want to wait until you have had your baby if you’re pregnant, unless the benefits of having the vaccine outweigh the risks to your child.

Is the vaccine available on the NHS?

The following categories are allowed to have free pneumo jab from the NHS:

• all children under the age of two
• adults aged 65 or over
• children and adults with certain long-term health conditions, such as a serious heart or kidney condition

If you’re over 65 and haven’t already had the NHS pneumonia vaccine, speak to your doctor about having this.
