How to Use Orlistat?

  1. Dosage: Take one capsule, three times a day, with each main meal containing fat. Do not exceed 3 capsules daily.
  2. Timing: Swallow the capsule with water, just before, during, or up to 1 hour after your meal.
  3. Dietary Advice:
    1. Follow a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet to maximize effectiveness.
    2. Aim to spread daily fat intake evenly across your three meals.
  4. Skipping Meals: If you miss a meal or eat a fat-free meal, skip that dose.
  5. Exercise: Combine Alli with regular physical activity for best results.

How long should Orlistat be taken?

The duration of Orlistat treatment depends on individual weight loss goals and response to the medication. Here’s some general guidance:

Recommended Duration of Use:

  • Initial Treatment: Orlos can be taken for up to 12 weeks. During this time, you should lose at least 5% of your initial body weight when combined with a reduced-calorie, low-fat diet.
  • Continuing Treatment: If you achieve the 5% weight loss target within 12 weeks, you can continue using Orlos for up to 6 months to 1 year, depending on your weight loss progress and advice from your healthcare provider.
  • Discontinuation: If you do not achieve at least 5% weight loss within the first 12 weeks, stop using Orlos and consult your healthcare provider for alternative strategies.

Key Points:

    1. Orlos should not be taken for longer than 6–12 months continuously without a healthcare provider’s supervision.
    2. Long-term lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, are critical for maintaining weight loss after stopping Orlos.
    3. Avoid using Orlos as a quick fix; it works best as part of a sustainable weight management plan.

Warnings:

  • Suitability:

    • Only for adults aged 18+ with a BMI of 28 or above.
    • Not suitable for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
    • Avoid use if allergic to Orlistat or any other ingredients in the capsules.

  • Medical Conditions:

    • Do not take Orlos if you:
      • Have chronic malabsorption syndrome (difficulty absorbing nutrients).
      • Have cholestasis (a liver condition affecting bile flow).
    • Consult your doctor if you have:
      • Diabetes, kidney disease, or a thyroid problem.
      • A history of liver disease or gallbladder problems.

  • Dietary Considerations:

    • A diet with too much fat may increase digestive side effects. Distribute fat intake evenly across meals.
    • Take a multivitamin supplement daily (preferably at bedtime) to prevent deficiencies in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K).

  • Drug Interactions:

    • Inform your doctor if you are taking:
      • Ciclosporin (immunosuppressant).
      • Warfarin or other blood thinners.
      • Amiodarone (heart medication).
      • Oral contraceptives (may be less effective if experiencing severe diarrhea).

Possible Side Effects:

Common (may affect 1 in 10 people):

  • Oily or fatty stools.
  • Increased urgency or frequency of bowel movements.
  • Flatulence with discharge.
  • Abdominal pain or discomfort.
