What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the persistent inability to attain and maintain an erection sufficient to permit satisfactory sexual performance. ED is also known as impotence.
ED is a very common condition, particularly in older men. It is estimated that half of all men between the ages of 40 and 70 will have it to some degree.
What are the risk factors for ED?
The risk factors for erectile dysfunction are obesity, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, endothelial dysfunction, lack of exercise, and smoking.
What are the causes of ED?
Erectile dysfunction is a complicated disorder with several possible organic and/or psychogenic causes. It can also be drug induced.
- Organic causes may be hypertension, hyperlipidaemia (high cholesterol), diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, hypogonadism, hyper-and hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease.
- Psychogenic causes may be situational (for example due to psychiatric illness [such as depression]) or generalized (for example due to lack of arousability).
- Drugs that can cause erectile dysfunction include antihypertensives, antipsychotics, and antidepressants.
